The birthday party that changed everything

Thirty minutes later, the doorbell rang.

Marc immediately looked up.

— Go open it.

I smile slightly.

— Not this time.

- That ?

— I have a surprise for you. You should go open it yourself.

He frowned.

Some guests exchanged curious glances.

Marc headed towards the entrance.

I heard the door open.

Then, silence.

A strange silence.

Heavy. A few seconds later, his face appeared in the doorway of the living room.

White as a sheet.

All eyes were on him.

"No!" he suddenly shouted. "No! Not today!"

The talks stopped instantly.

The music continued for a few seconds before someone turned it off.

I got up slowly.

A woman entered the room.

Big.

Elegant.

About thirty years.

Behind her was a small child of about six years old.

There was absolute silence.

The woman looked at Marc.

Then he looked at me.

Her eyes were filled with sadness.

Without anger.

Without hate.

Only sadness.

"I'm sorry," she said.

Marc seemed to be on the verge of panic.

— You had no right to come here!

The woman took a deep breath.

— For six years, I remained silent.

The guests began to realize that something was wrong.

My mother-in-law stood up abruptly.

- Who are you ?

The woman slowly turned her head.

— My name is Sophie.

Then he put a hand on the little boy's shoulder.

— And this is Lucas.

The boy was looking at the ground.
