The birthday party that changed everything

Sophie continued:

— Lucas is Marc's son.

A wave of astonishment swept through the room.

Some people let out a scream.

Others put their hands to their mouths.

Marc seemed unable to speak.

Three weeks earlier, he had discovered Sophie's existence.

By chance.

A forgotten message at an old email address.

Then another one.

Then, hundreds more.

A secret relationship that had lasted several years.

A double life.

A child.

Lies.

Promises.

All this time, when I thought I was building a future with him.

I didn't say anything immediately.

I wanted to understand.

I wanted to be sure.

Then I met Sophie.

And what I discovered was even more painful.

Marc had also lied to her.

He had told her that our marriage had ended a long time ago.

He was staying only for administrative reasons.

Sophie had finally understood the truth.

She had ended the relationship.

But Lucas remained his son.

An innocent child caught in the middle of all these lies.

In the living room, nobody was talking.

Marc finally tried to regain control.

He's lying!

But her voice was trembling. Sophie then presented several documents.

Then some photos.

Messages.

Evidence.

There is a lot of evidence.

Enough to dispel any doubt.

My mother-in-law sat down slowly.

The surprise was evident on his face.

For the first time in her life, she had nothing to say.

Then I spoke.

Quietly.

Without anger.

— For years, I believed I was never good enough.

I observed the guests.

— I believed that if I cooked better, if I cleaned more, if I tried even harder, things would change.

Several eyes filled with tears.

— But the problem wasn't me.

I looked at Marc.

— The problem was the lack of respect.
