Leo called her Grandma Johnson long before he realized she wasn't related to us.
Yesterday, the three of us celebrated his 18th birthday.
We didn't organize anything sophisticated.
Just homemade lasagna, chocolate cake, and 18 candles that almost set off the smoke detector.
Leo was wearing a paper crown that Johnson had bought him.
"Now that I'm an adult," he announced
, "I should eat two slices of cake."
“Adults pay rent,” I said.
He thought about that.
“One slice is fine.”
After blowing out the candles, Leo put his hand in his pocket and took out a small yellowish envelope.
He slid it across the table towards me.
I laughed.

“Hey friend, it’s your birthday. I’m supposed to give you things.”
“I know, Dad.”
Then he looked at Johnson.
“He gave it to me yesterday. He told me not to read it. He said that today was finally the right day to read it.”
I looked at her.
She wasn't smiling.
Her hands were trembling so much that the tea spilled onto the saucer.
The date written on the envelope caught
my attention.
It had been written 18 years earlier.
Before unfolding it, I recognized the lettering.
It was Goldi's.
“What is this?” I asked.
Johnson wiped away a tear.
“Arthur, she didn’t leave because she stopped loving either of you.”
I stared at her.
Announcement:
“He made me promise not to give you that letter until Leo turned 18.”
My hands were trembling as I opened it and began to read aloud.
"Arthur,
“If you’re reading this, it means I never had the chance to tell you the truth in person.”
“A few days before our son was born, I was diagnosed with an aggressive type of cancer. My doctors told me my chances were virtually zero.”
“I knew you would never leave my side.”
The ad said
, “I knew you would spend every last dollar, every hour, and every part of yourself trying to save me while raising our child.”
“I couldn’t allow you to lose your wife and your son’s childhood.”
“So I made the cruelest decision of my life. I let you believe I was the villain.”
“I filed for divorce because I knew that if you thought I had betrayed you, you would stop looking for me and dedicate all your love to raising our son.”
“I never stopped loving either of them.”
“I simply believed this was the only way to give them both the life they deserved.”
Announcement:
“I left this letter for Johnson and asked him to keep it hidden until our son turned 18.”
“I wanted him to be old enough to decide for himself what kind of woman I was.”
“I don’t even know if you’ll ever be able to forgive me. Maybe you shouldn’t.”
“But if there’s one thing I hope you believe, it’s that my leaving was never because I didn’t love our son or you.”
“I loved you both enough to allow you to hate me.”
“Goldi.”
