MY SON CALLED AT 2:13 A.M. AND WHISPERED, “MOM, TURN OFF ALL THE LIGHTS, HIDE, AND BE CAREFUL AROUND DAD.”

I OBEYED WITHOUT ASKING. MINUTES LATER MY HUSBAND OF 14 YEARS CAME INTO OUR ROOM IN GLOVES — AND THEN I SAW WHO THE $24 MILLION IN POLICIES WAS FOR.

PART 1

My son called me at 2:13 in the morning and whispered, “Mom, turn off all the lights, hide, and be careful around Dad.”

I obeyed without asking questions.

Minutes later, my husband of 14 years entered our bedroom with a folded sheet of paper and something in his hand that made my throat close.

I stayed silent… until I saw who those 24-million-dollar insurance policies were for.

“Mom, turn off the main breaker to the house. Hide. And please, don’t trust Dad.”

It was 2:13 in the morning when my son Toby’s voice left me frozen.

My name is Gwen, and I was alone in the house I’d inherited from my father in Cedar Hollow, Ohio — an old mansion I had personally restored when I was still working alongside him.

Christopher, my husband of fourteen years, had texted me half an hour earlier, saying a meeting two states away would last until dawn.

“Toby? What happened?”

“Just trust me, Mom. I’ll explain later.”

I didn’t ask anything else.

I turned off the main breaker, and the entire house went completely dark.

During the renovation, I’d built a small safe room behind an oak armoire to store documents, blueprints, and a few belongings that had been my father’s.

Christopher never knew it existed.

I went inside, closed the panel, and crouched down with one hand over my mouth.

A few minutes later, I heard a key in the front door.

Footsteps. Slow. Far too careful to be my husband’s normal footsteps.

He climbed the stairs and stopped in front of the bedroom.

Through a tiny ventilation opening, I saw a figure enter.

It was Christopher.

He wore a dark beanie, a thick jacket, and gloves.

In one hand, he held a small flashlight. In the other was something that made my throat go dry.

He was also carrying a folded sheet of paper.

He approached the bed, touched the sheets, and froze when he found them empty.

“Gwen…” he whispered.

I had never heard my name sound like that.

My phone vibrated in my hand.
