BV occurs when the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina changes.

It is not simply a matter of being “dirty,” and having BV doesn't mean that someone has poor hygiene.

A common symptom is a stronger or unusual odor, often described as fishy, particularly after sex.

Some people also notice:

• Thin vaginal discharge
• Grayish or white discharge
• Mild irritation

However, not everyone experiences obvious symptoms.

A sour odor by itself doesn't establish that you have BV.

5. A Yeast Infection Can Cause Changes Too

Many people associate yeast infections with a strong odor, but odor isn't usually the most characteristic symptom.

A vaginal yeast infection more commonly causes symptoms such as:

• Intense itching
• Burning
• Redness
• Swelling
• Thick, white discharge

The discharge is often described as resembling cottage cheese, although symptoms can vary.

A noticeable change in smell isn't enough to diagnose a yeast infection.

This is important because treating yourself for a yeast infection when you actually have BV, an STI, dermatitis, or another condition may delay appropriate treatment.
