“Your grandmother’s signature. Your bank account. The altered trust. Do you want me to explain?”
“I want my lawyer.”
“You don’t seem worried.”
“I am not.”
Ross leaned forward.
“Your badge won’t do you any good here.”
That was his mistake.
I had never mentioned having a badge.
I looked directly at the camera.
"Detective, how do you know I'm carrying one?"
He clenched his jaw.
He left without answering.
Five minutes later, a young receptionist came in to take an inventory of my belongings.
He opened my wallet and found the black document case under my driver's license.
The moment he saw my photograph and the golden badge of command, he froze.
"Madam..." he whispered.
Then he suddenly stood at attention.
"Call your boss," I told him. "Tell him to contact Assistant Attorney General Marcus Shaw through the secure line."
The agent went out into the hallway.
Voices were heard outside.
The doors opened.
Someone cursed.
Fifteen minutes later, Chief Daniel Harrow rushed into the room without his coat.
He stopped, turned pale, and gave a military salute.
“Commander… we had no idea.”
My parents followed him inside.
Vanessa continued filming, and her smile widened because she believed the boss had arrived to congratulate them.
I stood there while they removed the handcuffs.
“You had no idea because Detective Ross concealed my identity in the affidavit for the arrest warrant.”
Ross appeared at the door.
“Boss, she’s manipulating him.”
"No," I said. "You manipulated a judge."
I nodded towards Vanessa's phone.
“Keep broadcasting. Your audience deserves the ending.”
The chief secured the interrogation room.
Moments later, state investigators entered through both hallways.
My researchers.
Their navy blue jackets bore the same logo that Vanessa used to make fun of whenever she saw one folded inside my car.
My assistant, Lila Chen, placed three boxes of evidence on the table.
Vanessa's expression finally changed.
For the first time that night, her phone trembled in her hand.
Inside the boxes were certified copies of my grandmother's original trust, forensic analyses of forged signatures, transfers linked to my father's shell companies, and messages exchanged between Ross and my mother.
One of the messages said:
Make the arrest public. Elena must appear guilty before true trust is revealed.
My father reached for the box.
